BP4: Broadway

 Angel De Quinta’s blog Stage Door had a lot of broadway titles, many of which I had never heard of before and some titles which I was familiar with but as a movie and not as a broadway show - such as Sweeney Todd. Out of the broadway titles that I saw on the blog a few that I would label, in this context as my "favorites", meaning the titles I would be interested in seeing more of would be The Color Purple, Barnum, and Pippin. The biggest reason is that from the few clips and/ or the blog context that De Quinta had referring to them (from the few blogs I read De Quinta's blog seem to focus mainly on the people within the broadway show rather than talking about the show itself?) the storylines interested me and some of the song pieces I really liked. Especially with the song clips from The Color Purple, the woman from the old and newer productions all had gorgeous vocals (even if De Quinta seems to think the newer production is lacking). My interest in The Color Purple, and Barnum also stem from my limited knowledge of their movie counterparts. With the The Greatest Showman, which came out last year being Barnum's counterpart - I am obsessed with the soundtrack for the movie even though I have yet to actually see the movie.
Talking about broadway titles that, I did not see/ find on De Quinta's bog, but are my personal favorites I would have to list Phantom of the Opera, Dear Evan Hansen, Heathers, Wicked, Be More Chill, and Hamilton. Most of which are my favorites solely based on their soundtracks - although I have seen clips, if not the entire show, online from all of them. With the exception of Phantom of the Opera which I was lucky enough to see live. A lot of my favorites also have a bunch of animatics online, which is how I learned about most of them. And I really love seeing how each animator will interpret, through their animation, the story, emotions and action within each song. I love how much emotion and how much of a story broadway songs tend to have.
And since I literally have a youtube list filled with animatics based off of broadway musicals (and this post is about Broadway) here are a few of my favorites - since it was because of animatics like this that I became interested in the actual broadway titles they are about;

Dear Evan Hansen - Waving Through A Window (animatic by kjbionicle)

Heathers - Shine a Light (Reprise) (animatic by scribs)

Be More Chill - UPGRADE (animatic by Claudia Cacace)

Hamilton - Congratulations (animatic by Chiino)

A6: Performance Art

For my performance art piece I dressed up in my Spryo the dragon onesie and walked around the park, picking up "treasure" while I played music from the original game through a small speaker attached to my bag. I wanted to do something a bit more fun and humorous and given that Spyro is a pretty iconic/ recognizable character I thought I would be able to get better reactions from other people. Both the music and my actions of picking up gems/treasures were from the original game Spyro the Dragon . Not that many people gave noticeable reactions to my performance, most would smile but then look away very quickly or they would simply ignore me. The best reactions I got came from children and people who seemed to recognize who I was dressed up as. The entire experience was not that much fun for me, I got hot very quickly inside the onesie walking around the park, my view was blocked because of the way the hoodie was designed,  and needless to say it was pretty embarrassing. A5: Xerox

Battle of the Birds For my xerox art I decided to style it after Andre Masson's sand art. I tried to follow the same kind of process of trying to draw with my subconscious by involving chance. I cut out the general outline for the xerox images and then I randomly ripped and threw them onto the canvas. From there I started to rearrange them to try and form some sort of monster and I ended up getting the two bird like creatures. After I had those formed I took a bottle of glue and I started to randomly spread it around the canvas and then I flung sand onto it and waited until I thought the glue had dried before tipping it over to get rid of the excess. I added some red charcoal masks to distinguish the eyes and then more or less at random everywhere else. I titles it battle of the Birds as a play on Andre Masson's sand art Battle of the Fishes.

A3: Kuri

Ivette Torres Professor Roundtree Art and Technology March 1st, 2018 Kuri is described as being a home and companion AI robot. Originally built to be a security robot, Kuri's creators decided to focus on a robot for companionship rather than protection. Kuri is more or less a robot designed for interaction and entertainment. The biggest influence from previous decades for Kuri, and basically all robotics, would be the automaton. Automaton were mechanisms that performed human functions and typically, but not always, had a human-like aesthetic as part of their designs. Some examples of automaton would be   Jacques Vaucanson’s automan of a pooping duck in which he constructed a mechanical duck that would eat seeds and poop them out and  Wolfgang von Kempelen chess playing automaton – which turned out to be a complete scam but encourage other engineers to create automaton that could actually perform complex actions.
